Nurse training for prostate cancer survivorship self-management

The Client
To develop a supported self-management training workshop for nurses who would be providing self-management support to prostate cancer survivors.

The Need
To develop a supported self-management training workshop for nurses who would be providing self-management support to prostate cancer survivors.

The Action
The design of the workshop, the development of a training manual, and conducting the initial workshops with Macmillan nurses. The key theories utilised within the development of this training were self-determination theory, person-centred theory, and motivational interviewing.

The Outcome
The workshops were rolled out across UK hospitals as part of UK national cancer survivorship initiatives.
“Apprehensive nurses were soon on board with these self-management workshops once they were taught how they could easily integrate self-determination theory and motivational interviewing into their current practice. These workshops and the guidance that came from them have played an important role in streamlining prostate cancer aftercare.”
